PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) THERAPY FOR HAIR GROWTH

There is a non-surgical method of stimulating hair growth called Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. PRP therapy for hair loss is a treatment that involves withdrawing a patient’s own blood, processing it so that only the enriched cells (platelet-rich plasma) remain, and injecting it into the scalp.

PRP therapy will not regrow new hair in areas of the scalp that are completely bald. PRP is most effective in areas of the scalp with thinning hair or mild to moderate hair loss.

What are Platelets and what do they do?

Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. If one of your blood vessels gets damaged, it sends out signals that are picked up by platelets. The platelets then rush to the site of damage and form a plug, or clot, to repair the damage. However, platelets are more than that, they also contain growth molecules that help in recovery and healing of tissue.

The PRP procedure

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy for hair loss is a treatment that involves withdrawing a patient’s own blood, processing it so that only the enriched cells (platelet-rich plasma) remain, and injecting it into the scalp. PRP contains essential proteins that stimulate natural hair growth. And while it may not work for all hair loss patients, the majority of those who have had PRP therapy have reported mild to significant new hair growth in areas of the scalp with thinning hair.

Processing the blood

PRP comes from the patient’s own blood. A minimal amount of blood for the PRP procedure is drawn from the patient’s vein in the arm. The tube containing your blood is placed in a centrifuge that spins for ten minutes.

The centrifuge spins the red and white blood cells and platelets and concentrates them in the tube. Blood plasma that is rich in platelets is taken from the appropriate level. Then, with a bit more preparation, the PRP is ready for injection.

Injecting PRP in the scalp area

You will be resting comfortably on our surgical table getting prepared for the procedure. The doctor will apply a numbing agent to the areas of your scalp to prepare it. The platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into areas of the scalp where hair is thinning. You will not be sedated or medicated and the PRP treatment is completed in 1 hour or less.  It is safe, painless, and does not have any side- effects.
